2011 British Grand Prix - Qualifying

Some get it right, some not so much.

I had started an editorial on the blown diffuser debate but half way through, Mark Webber gave a statement which covered all the points I wanted to make however qualifying was to see a bad joke become a running gag as the the official stance on the ruling changed faster than the weather. The final word seems to be, 'We don't know what we're doing so maybe we will let everyone else decide for us.' (Not necessarily an actual quote.) Evidently, the FIA is one of those who could not get it right.

Red Bull got it right, locking out the first row with Webber on poll. Their sister team, Toro Rosso  got the timing wrong and found themselves behind a Lotus. Ferrari got it right locking out the second row with Alonso in P 3 along side teammate Massa. McLaren got it half right putting Button in P5 but sending Hamilton out on the wrong tires relegated him to P 10. Most teams struggled to come to terms with the rain and the constantly changing rules. Two drivers who also got it right though were Paul DiResta who qualified his Force India in 6th place and Heikki Kovalainen who got his Lotus to Q2 to start 17th on the grid. Daniel Ricciardo had no problem qualifying within the 107% rule despite practice time being limited by the weather. He was able to qualify just .575 seconds behind his teammate Vitantonio Liuzzi.
